Joey's Weekly Challenge #76: Maryhill

Thank you, Joey, for choosing Maryhill for this week's challenge. This tangle is so striking, yet simple to learn. It has a big bang for the buck! (Mooka would've been nice, too. Maybe next year!) This is another challenge I may revisit. There are so many possibilities! I'm looking forward to seeing everyone's work. For this version, I tried going from light to dark by using wider pens (from Micron 01 to Graphic 1). I wanted to give the front tile a ghost effect with my zenstone, but it had no effect. I added white charcoal, which couldn't really adhere to the zenstone very well. Sparkles in the lines would be nice, too. I feel another Maryhill coming on!

    1. Thanks, Emily! I first tried the zenstone, but it didn't even make a dent, so to speak. I used white charcoal.

  4. This is lovely!! I love all the circles with the contrasting "heaviness" - what is a zenstone? Great!!

    1. A zenstone is actually a soapstone. It's very soft, and has an almost buttery feel to it. Not as bright as white charcoal. I think it probably stands out best on black tiles, where it gives a kind of ghost effect! You can buy one on zentangle.com.

  5. I really like your different line widths. I've tried it that way white on black, but you inspired me to try the black on white. I tried "thickening" some of my lines that were shaded..so just part of the tangle. Thanks for the inspiration and great to see Maryhill!
